Description up

Note
As of DomainScan Pro v2.83 / DomainScan Standard 6.63, text based device files has become “legacy” lists, due to the introduction of XML based devices lists, which is explained in Techdoc 11.

Computer and device lists are text files with computer or device names that are to be included in DomainScan.

Device lists can be used to define devices that are not discovered via the ‘Windows Network’ discovery, which practically means any non-Windows based device.

The only difference between device and computer lists is in the way that new names in the device list are created. Device names in the device list will be created as devices and devices in a computer list will be created as computers. However this may be overruled, if DomainScan Pro can determine another device type upon scanning.

DomainScan Pro supports multiple device and computer files, which means that 3rd party software can create device lists, and thereby integrate with DomainScan.

When a device/computer list is imported to DomainScan, then a user defined domain will be created with the same name that is defined in the device file list.

Syntax and example up
Example

[DomainScan device list] = My devices
#DESCRIPTION: Devices that are not detected by the browser service
localhost
127.0.0.1 = my_home
?192.168.0.1 = gateway
?192.168.0.2 = hplj5
?192.168.0.3
?192.168.0.4 = switch
?192.168.0.5

127.0.0.1 will be added to the database regardless of the online status of the device. Remaining devices will be added to the database once their precense is detected

File name

Device list:

The device file must have the following name pattern:

ds2_net_*.txt,

where * can be anything – for instance ds2_net_1.txt is a valid name.

Computer list:

The computer file must have the following name pattern:

ds2_pc_*.txt,

where * can be anything – for instance ds2_pc_names_from_dns.txt is a valid name.

Location

Device list files must be located in the database folder. The filename cannot be longer than 62 characters.

Syntax

The syntax for computer and device lists are identical.

The first line in the file must be:

[DomainScan device list]
Or
[DomainScan device list] = device_list_name

Note: Prior to DomainScan v2.61 and DomainScan Light v6.31, the first line must be '[DomainScan device list 2]'. This syntax is obsolete, but supported as of DomainScan v2.61 / DomainScan Light v6.31

device_list_name can be anything, but less than 62 characters, and if omitted, then the user domain will be created with the filename as domain name.

All other lines in the file must be valid device names, with the following syntax:

devicename
Or
devicename = device_description

devicename must be unique and less than 64 characters.

? prefix
One can prefix the device name with a ? which means that DomainScan Pro will be set not add the device to the database until the device is detected as being online.

Empty lines or lines beginning with a # will be ignored by DomainScan Pro when the file is parsed.

If the line starts with #DESCRIPTION: then DomainScan Pro will show the information in the device list editor.

Domain name

A device domain will be created with the following syntax:

If device_list_name is provided:

Domain name = {device_list_name}.

If device_list_name is not provided, DomainScan will create the Domain name from the file name. The ds2_ prefix and the .txt extension will be removed.
For instance, if the filename is ds2_net_switches.txt then the domain name will be created as {net_switches}

Note
Device list domain names will always be enclosed by curly brackets

Case sensitivity up

The device_list_name and device_description parameters are case sensitive. File name and devicename are not, and the values are converted automatically to lower case by DomainScan.
