Description

DomainScan Pro uses a unique per-usage license model, which means that DomainScan Pro will not occupy more licenses than needed.

Generally, each domain or device requires 1 license unit, and each server requires 2 license units.

The use of the license unit will only last as long as the monitor is assigned to the device, because the license unit will automatically be freed and returned to the pool of available license units, which means that license units can be reused elsewhere if needed.

The pool of license units can consist of one or more license keys, each containing a number of units, and the sum of license units in the keys add up to the number of available units that are available for DomainScan Pro to use.

If DomainScan Pro runs out of available units, i.e. all units are in use then two approaches can be made in order make DomainScan Pro run correctly again (DomainScan Pro will stop to add computers, users, execute monitors etc. if it cannot fetch license units):

  • 1. Delete (obsolete) devices, remove monitors or perform less auditing – all which will lower the license unit usage, and free some units.

  • 2. Add additional license units.

Note: In a normal company, new computers will be added over time, which means that the number of used license unit will increase continuously. As a rule of thumb, one can predict between 30-60% new computers each year.

License unit usage calculation

License unit needs are calculated like this:

Domains

1 license unit per domain (Except [Local users] and [default]).

+ 2 license unit per Directory enabled domain.

Devices

1 license unit per device.

Audit
Basic audit: 0 license units
Server and/or Multimedia audit: +1 license unit
Other audit: +1 license unit

If more than basic audit has been collected at one point and audit is disabled: +1 license unit

(Ie. Audit will require up to 2 license units per device)

Monitors and responses
Each monitor or response assigned to the device: +½ license unit

(The value is rounded up to the nearest whole number - ie. 7 monitors and responses require 4 license units.)

Users

0 license units per user.

IP range monitors

4 addresses: +1 license unit

(The value is rounded up, so that a range monitor that covers 17 addresses, will require 5 license units)

Notifications

+10 % of all the above.

Per device event logging:

+10 % of all the above.

(Per-device event logging includes all functionality that stores information about device or user in separate folders. That includes and device specific information like notes, events and statistics

Example
if the sum of monitors, devices, users and domains require 200 units, then Notifications will require additionally 20 units for a total of 220 units, plus additional 22 units for per-device logging, which will amount to 242 license units (+ units used by the DomainScan Pro runtime).

DomainScan Pro runtime settings

Worker threads:

1 or 2 worker threads: +0 license units.
3 or more worker threads: +10 license units per thread. (This is 3 threads = 10 license units, 4 threads = 20 license units etc.

DomainScan Pro Client

Each remote DomainScan Pro Client installation that are making changes to the database setup: +10 units

(DomainScan Pro Client itself does not require license units, and can be installed on as many devices as one might want. However, only one instance of DomainScan Pro Service is permitted.

License usage report

Because of the fact that the number of used license units are dynamically changing, it may be somewhat difficult to know the current usage. To obtain that knowledge, a License usage report tool is included in DomainScan, which will show a detailed report about the usage on the fly.

Also, if the usage is nearing saturation (>90% usage), then DomainScan Pro will start to warn in the overview section, so that it is possible to make changes to the setup before DomainScan Pro is saturated license-wise.
