DomainScan help

A device list is a list where one can manually add devices to DomainScan.

By default DomainScan will query Windows for the list of computers that can be found in available workgroups and domains.
However, this list will most likely not contain all devices on the network, such as switches, firewalls, printers and most other non-Windows based devices.

However, by adding names to a device list, one can include these devices in DomainScan. And since the device list syntax is straightforward, and DomainScan supports multiple devices lists, one can also have 3rd party applications create device lists that DomainScan can use.

Two types of device list are supported:

XML based device lists
A flexible and extensible format, where each device can be pre-assigned to any device type.
This format is the preferred format.

See Technote 11 for detailed usage information about these device lists.

Supported as of DomainScan v2.83 (pro) / v6.63 (standard)
Text based device lists (Legacy lists)
A simple format, where one can have one device name per line. There are two variations of text-based lists: Windows devices and non-Windows devices.

See Technote 3 for detailed usage information about these device lists.

Overview up

The overview displays known device lists in the left Device lists pane.
If one selects a device list, then information about the list is shown in the right pane, as seen in the picture above.

Add / Edit device lists up
Use the Options menu in order to add or edit a device list.

List name
Used to create a unique device list filename. The full path and name of the file is written with gray just under the text.

Note
With legacy lists, the list name is also used for the Domain name, unless a separate domain name is supplied.

Domain name
Specifies the name of the domain, as it is created in DomainScan.
When created, DomainScan adds { and } around the domain name, so that one can easily identify device list domains, which is not real domains.

Description
Here, one can add an optional description.

Default device type
DomainScan assigns the selected type to the new devices.

Note
This field is not supported by legacy lists.

Allow devices to be transferred to the discovered domain automatically
When a device is discovered, DomainScan tries to extract information from the device, and if successful, the current Domain relation is also extracted, and by default, DomainScan will transfer the device to the correct domain.
If one wants to override this behavior, uncheck this option, and devices will be forced to remain in the domain that the device list sets.

Type
Here, one can select what type of list the device list will have.
Once a device list is created and saved, one may convert from a legacy list and to a XML based list, but not the other way around.

Note
DomainScan Standard does not support conversion of legacy formats into the XML format

Metadata
The device list may contain additional information, which is displayed here. One cannot edit this information.

Add / Edit devices up

A new device can be added to the list by entering the device name in the Device name field.

The Custom device description field is optional, and can be left empty if wanted.

Don’t add the device to the DomainScan database, before the device has been detected as being online
Set this option to instruct DomainScan that the device name are not to be added to the database before the device is detected as being online.

DomainScan will try to detect the device in each scan cycle, and once it’s online, it will be added to the database.
