The Data analysis tool analyses data on-the-fly in order to present a number of small and comprehensible reports that can help one getting the overview.

For instance, Data analysis can be used to finding devices without the latest service pack or devices that are out of warranty.

Report options

This menu is enabled if the chosen report can be customized. For instance the Operating systems report can be grouped with or without service packs.

Network roles as reported by the LAN manager

Network roles up

All windows based network devices publish some of its features via the LAN Manager protocol, so that other devices can find certain network based services, for instance SQL services.

There are a number of roles, as specified in the table below. These roles are discovered by DomainScan at each scan, and this report shows these roles, and the devices that are reporting that they have this ability.

Role Note
Workstation service Every NT based PC will run this service, unless turned off manually
Server service Every NT based PC will run this service, unless turned off manually
Microsoft SQL Server SQL Desktop engines are also included
Primary domain controller Only 1 computer in the domain will have this role
Backup domain controller Assigned to the computer that is "stand-by" primary domain controller
Time server Assigned to computers that is responsible for controlling the domain time
Apple File Protocol server Apple File Protocol server
Novell server Novell server
LAN Manager 2.x Domain Member Can be UNIX PCs with LAN Manager 2.x software
VPN/Dial-In server Assigned to VPN and Dial-in servers
Unix/Xenix server Unix servers
Windows NT All Windows NT based computers will have this role (Windows NT, 200x, XP, Vista)
Windows for Workgroups Server Windows 3.x and 9x will have this role
Microsoft File and Print for Netware A service, which allows Netware clients to access the server is installed
Non DC-Server Assigned to all server installations, which does not have a domain service installed
Potential browser Assigned to computers that may work as a network browser. This assignment changes constantly, and DomainScan does not record "potential browser" changes
Backup browser Assigned to computers that runs as a "stand-by" master browser
Master browser Assigned to the computer that is responsible for updating the list of computers on the domain or local subnet, if the domain spans multiple subdomains. A network error has occured, if more than one computer is assigned as master browser
Domain master browser Assigned to the computer that is responsible for updating the list of computers across the entire network. This assignment is only given, if the domain contains subdomains. In that case, a "Master Browser" will be assigned for each subdomain
